How to File an e-FIR Online
A Complete Legal Guide under BNSS Section 173
Did you know? Under the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), filing a police complaint digitally is now a legal right. You no longer need to visit a police station for the initial reporting of non-heinous crimes.
Step 1: Visit the State Police Portal
Every state in India has a dedicated CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems) portal. For example, if you are in Noida, you would use the UP Police “Citizen Services” portal.
Note: Ensure you are on the official ‘.gov.in’ website to protect your data.
Step 2: Register or Login
You will need to create a user ID using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. This is essential for the digital verification process required under Section 173 of the BNSS.
Step 3: Enter Crime Details
Fill in the “Complaint Form” with specific details:
- Nature of Incident: (Theft, Lost Documents, Mobile Snatching, etc.)
- Place and Time: Be as precise as possible.
- Evidence: Upload photos or screenshots if applicable.
Step 4: The 3-Day Rule (Crucial)
Under BNSS, after filing an e-FIR, you must digitally sign the document. If it is a serious matter, the police may require you to visit the station within 3 days to sign the record in person to make it an official FIR.
